Nowadays the painful heel-bones are not a rare thing. But it does not still mean that pain sensation is exclusively and inevitably connected with so called “heel-bone spur”, which is blamed for everything bad. The fact of the matter is that everybody is in possession of osseous wedge-like bone excrescence (or outgrowth) located upon the inner side of the heel-bone. The spur by itself does not provide the clinical symptoms. Pain appears only in case when lateral longitudinal arch (external arch) is depressing (or casting down) in situation of turning the heel-bone up. If this turning happens, the spur rotates to the sole’s fascia (plantar fascia aponeurosis) side and first pricks and then thrusts the fascia. Fascia is a layer of fibrous connective tissue that surrounds muscles, vessels, nerves. The result of this prickling is onset and farther development of fascia inflammation.
Pain sensation is the strongest in the morning. Later on, in the process of walking, as blood circulation improves, traumatized zone is getting more of fresh blood and pain decreases. The diminishing of moving activities results in painful reminder of inflammation still present.
The sole fascia inflammation does not succumb to medication treatment because the main reason for a problem – the arch deformation – is not eliminated. Taking the painkillers may only aggravate the inflammation process. Thus the sufferers are tormented for 5-10 years until they walk into our Centres.
Why it is so that they are promptly helped by Centres specialists? Because there is only one way (well known and professed by us) to eliminate the heel pain – it is by proper feet correction, using off-loading non-rigid orthotics “podo-correctors”. Immediate result – you instantly stop feeling pain while jumping on the heels. In a week or two the inflammation is heeled and you forget about your long-term problem (sure as long as you wear podo-correctors).
There are a lot of reasons for heel pain as the result of inflammation. The foot-ware that is manufactured not properly and correctly is in the first place. Properly means that foot-ware support points must correspond and match with support points of the feet skeleton.
The support for the heel bone is represented by bone’s knob that has to correspond and coincide with heel-piece centre.
Under this proper condition for heel-piece, the support comfortably falls on soft tissue of the heels side surfaces. At walking process, these points are affected by the walking strokes because the internal arch stops working, i.e. stops amortizing (the arche’s support points are shifted). The similar pain sensation emerges as well when transversal arch is corrected, and pilot affects soft tissues of the soles, and not the skeletal support points of metatarsals.
There might be still other reasons for the heels pain sensation, namely the difference in the lower extremities lengths, as well as height of heel-piece that is not correctly chosen for the particular foot. It is very often the case that pain emerges when muscles are in hypertone, when foot has highly elevated front part and the external arch has possibility for depression.
